Supporting adults with complex mental health needs is some of the most meaningful work there is. It is also some of the most demanding. Our staff give their patience, compassion and energy every single day, often through difficult moments that never make the headlines. At Salome Care we believe that looking after the people who provide care is just as important as the care itself. This summer that belief found an unexpected home in a small corner of our garden.

A few of our staff are keen gardeners in their own time.

They had an idea: to sow wildflowers in one section of the garden and see whether they could one day spread across the whole space. What began as a trial quickly became something more personal. Time outdoors with their hands in the soil gave them a chance to slow down, breathe and reset after busy shifts. Watching the seeds come up brought a sense of calm and achievement, along with a bit of joy. Today that corner is alive with colour. Soft pinks, purples and bright daisies are drawing in bees and butterflies and brightening the garden for everyone who passes.

We know that when staff feel valued and well, residents feel the difference too. A team that is supported brings more warmth and steadiness into the home, and the same care they showed these wildflowers is the care they show our residents every day. The trial has shown us what is possible. Next year we plan to expand the wildflower areas and invite residents to plant alongside staff from the very start. The garden is becoming a shared space where everyone at Allerford House can grow, heal and find a little tranquillity together. That is exactly the kind of community we set out to build.
